How to Stop Your Dog from Barking

Thinking about how to stop your dog from barking can keep you awake at night. Whether it’s your dog or someone else’s a constantly barking dog can drive you crazy.  And it doesn’t matter if it’s a deep “Woof, woof, woof” or that ear piercing “Yap, Yap, Yap” it can get on your nerves!

But did you know that barking is not something that dogs need to do in order to be happy? In fact, barking can be a sign of stress, frustration, anxiety or over excitement none of which are good for your dog or you. A contented, relaxed dog doesn’t bark!

The most common type of barking are dogs who bark when you are not home.  How do you find out about it? Usually from a neighbor who complains or worse, the canine control officer shows up.

How to Stop Your Dog from Barking isn’t a matter of treating the symptoms.  You have to gain an understanding of why your dog is barking in the first place.

This understanding begins with seeing it from your dog’s perspective.  Here’s what you have to know.  Your dog is a pack animal who recognizes that everyone in the pack is either a leader or a follower.  The leader is the one who protects the pack.

They are comfortable when they are in the pack so if everyone heads off to work Monday morning leaving them alone, they get stressed because they have lost their pack!  I’m guessing you’d feel that way too if you suddenly found yourself with unwanted “alone time”.

So what they do is start calling out to you to come back – that’s their job.

Compare it to you being the parent of a toddler with your main job of maintaining safety.  You keep an eye on them at all times.  As long as you know where they are they are safe and you are relaxed.

But imagine if they suddenly managed to get out of the house and you discover them missing.  What would you do?  Run after them of course!barking dog cries help me

But what if the door was stuck and you couldn’t get it open? And all the other doors and windows are locked. Then what would you do…  Phone for help? That isn’t an option for your dog!

My guess is that you’d start shouting for help. Well that is exactly what your dog is doing…

You undoubtedly wouldn’t be making yourself a cup of tea or coffee, knowing your infant was meandering the streets alone.

By now I’m sure you starting to see why your dog is stressed and barking when you leave.

And what about all those other exasperating behaviors like chewing, destroying household items or digging under the fence…things only happen when you’re not around… You guessed it – they are all symptoms of a stressed dog that’s desperately anxious about you not being home. And the only way he can “talk” about it is barking!  He doesn’t speak English!

So what’s the solution? Most people think it’s by giving them a bone to chew on whilst you are away. But that definitely isn’t it! Would you say to the parent who is totally frazzled that their young child is out on the streets: “Don’t worry, here’s some chocolate”! No matter how much you may love chocolate, it is not going to help this situation.

Toys, even the ones with food inside also do not treat the cause of the problem. Because they only treat the symptoms you will be lucky if they work for half an hour or so, but they won’t help for very long.  You already have realized this because you’ve tried it!

Pack leader name tagThe solution is quite simple. Your dog needs to see YOU as the pack leader. Once he does your dog will not see it as his job to protect you. He will remain relaxed regardless of your comings and goings. Gaining a calm, relaxed dog isn’t a matter of tricks, just a true understanding.

  • Herbal remedies: If you budget allows you can use some herbal products to help them relax, but remember it doesn’t address the cause of the problem
  • Dog walkers: Hiring someone to take your dog for a walk in the middle of the day will help to give variety into your dog’s day
  • Be calm yourself when you leave: Don’t show any excited behavior before you go and take about 5 minutes to say goodbye helping them to stay relaxed as you are.
  • Comfort jackets: You can purchase jackets and shirts that are designed for comfort but they can be costly and success is not guaranteed.
